While Barnes and his staff take on CNG conversion for other businesses' vehicles, it will be converting at least 40 of its own trucks by mid-2014. Barnes Green Energy is well on its way to its projection of 50 externally generated conversions in the next year, with 12 contracts in place, Barnes said.
“Switching over to CNG for our fleet was a no-brainer,” he said. “The conversion cost will be, on average, $9,500 to $12,500 based on engine size and vehicle modifications needed. Taking into consideration the miles we drive each truck per year, our average payback will be less than five years at the current price differential between petroleum and diesel products and CNG. We only expect the price gap to widen in the future.
“Due to the fact that we keep our vehicles for 10 years or longer, we will see huge savings, and it will insulate us from wild cost spikes that add to operating costs.”
